  • Autolab 1.0 Released

    A while back I blogged about the Autolab (which I have used on Fusion as well as Workstation) for testing new things and training for certifications as well as live demos. This has proven a very valuable resource for me and it will be for you as well. Many of the vBrownbag hosts have also used the Autolab in their continued weekly virtualization podcast on VMware certifications.

    The Autolab 1.0 was released today. The Autolab has added many new features including Veeam ONE as well as vCloud Director and VMware View. These features are all optional but strong additions to an already strong way to deliver your self contained Lab.

    And if you want to see the Autolab in action. Our very own Jason Nash with Varrow will be using the Autolab at VMworld in his session in a live demo.

  • Citrix Edgesight not uploading Error 1309

    Recently I have done several Citrix EdgeSight 5.4 implementations on Windows 2008 R2 and I have noticed a trend in large or busy environments where the Citrix Edgesight Agent cannot upload the performance data after Microsoft released a security update, MS11-100. It is a known issue but you will likely come across this on any new implementations as the default configuration will not work without additional changes.

    Citrix details the solution in CTX132116 I have also included the information below on how to resolve this issue.

    Microsoft security update MS11-100 limits the maximum number of form keys, files, and JSON members to 1000 in an HTTP request. Because of this change, ASP.NET applications reject requests that have more than 1000 of these elements. HTTP clients that make these kinds of requests will be denied, and an error message will appear in the web browser. The error message will usually have an HTTP 500 status code. This new limit can be configured on a per-application basis.

    Resolution.

    The following procedure is a customized version of that found in the Microsoft article:

    1. Open the %ProgramFiles(x86)%CitrixSystem MonitoringServerEdgeSightPages folder on the EdgeSight server.
    2. Create a copy of the web.config file and rename it web.config.pre-KB2661403.
    3. Open the web.config file in Notepad.
    4. Locate the section of text at the bottom of the file between the </location> and </configuration> tags.
    5. Add the following entries that are in boldface into the web.config file, as shown in the following code snippet:

      If the web.config file already contains the <appSettings> tag, then you have to insert the <add> tag under the existing <appSettings> tag.

      </system.web>
      </location>

      <appSettings>
      <add key=”aspnet:MaxHttpCollectionKeys” value=”10000″ />
      </appSettings>

      </configuration>

      Note: A value of 10000 is used in the example above. Current testing has proved that a value between 5000 and 10000 is typical to accommodate most daily payload uploads. Note that this value is environment dependent. A higher value might be required or a lower value might be sufficient. Citrix recommends testing a value and increase or decrease the value as required until a minimum threshold is identified. Customers should monitor if the symptoms recur with larger payloads and adjust the key value as required. Additionally, a significantly higher value, such as a value between 50000 to 80000, might be required for the first 24 hours until backlogged payload data is uploaded. Later, the key value can be decreased.

    6. Save the file and close the text editor.
    7. Restart IIS.

  • Winds of Change, now with Varrow

    Lately my blogging activity has been a little slacking. I am going to let you in on a probably not so secret secret. Sometimes opportunity knocks softly and sometimes it hits you with a hammer on the head and you have to recognize and seize that opportunity.

    The winds of change have taken me to Varrow focusing on delivering End User Computing solutions. Varrow has developed a reputation for hiring great talent. I don’t know how I got hired but I hope I can do this company justice. Varrow has three speakers at VMworld this year and now has 5 vExperts on their staff.

    Read Jason Nash’s blog here and go to their sessions, you will not be disappointed.

    Also make sure you mark your calendar for Varrow Madness 2013 #VM13
    Varrow Madness 2013 will be in Raleigh, NC on March 21st!

    Expect the same variety but mainly with a focus on the user and how these products and tools can help a customer succeed with their goals.  I expect to continue my blogging around Citrix, VMware and other exciting technologies in the End User Computing arena.

  • Citrix Tech Preview: Aruba – Personalized VDI in a Box

    Citrix announces a technology preview of Project Aruba that extends the simple affordable all-in-one Citrix VDI-in-a-Box with personal vDisk technology to reduce costs by delivering highly personalized virtual desktops with the cost-efficiency of desktop pools.  The solution delivers transforms Windows into a simple VDI-based cloud service .

    The industry is rapidly moving from the PC era to the cloud era. Businesses of all sizes want to adopt desktop virtualization and realize its benefits of driving efficiencies, adopting mobile workstyles and improving continuity – but  many face tight budget and resource challenges.

    Citrix VDI-in-a-Box address these needs head on.  The VDI-in-a-Box design eliminates multiple moving parts that run up the cost and complexity of VDI. The all-in-one patented VDI grid architecture runs on inexpensive off-the-shelf servers.  Scaling simply involves adding another server, with nothing to rearchitect or reconfigure.

    Reduce costs
    Project Aruba delivers complete end-user personalization and flexibility while dramatically lowering costs by layering end-user applications and preferences as personal vDisks on cost-efficient desktop pools.  This solution reduces costs and delivers virtual desktops for less than the cost of PCs without compromising  rich end-user experiences.  Key features include:

    • Personalized virtual desktops: You no longer have to choose between consolidating management using desktop pools versus delivering end-users the flexibility to install their own applications and data.  Project Aruba eliminates the need to create separate static desktops to carry forward end-user customization by coupling single-instance management with the ability to have individual user workspaces for their applications and data.
    • Single instance management: Rather than juggling many persistent desktops, IT can maintain one master copy of desktop images while preserving the personalization of user applications and data. This dramatically reduces maintenance efforts and cuts datacenter storage costs up to 90 percent.
    • Support for Windows 2008 R2: Project Aruba manages Windows 2008 R2, Windows 7 and Windows XP –based virtual desktops – enabling customers to select the ideal virtual desktop environment based on compatibility and costs.
    • Cost-effective Windows-as-a-Service with VDI: Project Aruba extends the Citrix vision of enabling Windows-as-a-Service and adds a simple yet highly cost-effective VDI option based on Citrix VDI-in-a-Box to the already successful Citrix Service Provider (CSP) portfolio of hosted-shared desktops with XenApp, and enterprise-class desktop virtualization with XenDesktop.  The newly released reference architecture for Desktops-as-a-Service provides a validated blueprint for service providers looking to deliver VDI-based Desktops-as-a-Service at a fraction of the costs of other alternatives while complying with Microsoft licensing.
    • Windows 8 support (Beta): Project Aruba runs Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 virtual desktops.  All features of Windows 8 including the new Metro interface are fully supported.  Since Windows 8 is not yet generally available, this feature is currently in Beta.
    • Simpler, more flexible: Project Aruba makes management even simpler and more efficient with added features such as access to multiple data stores for optimizing storage, and a touchless DTAgent that updates the desktop agent on all golden images and their desktop instances  automatically when the VDI-in-a-Box software is upgraded.

    Citrix is transforming desktop virtualization into a cloud service that can run anywhere.  For smaller customers that want a simple VDI solution, this tech preview combines the  affordable all-in-one VDI-in-a-Box with personal vDisk technology to deliver personalized virtual desktops for less than the cost of PCs.

    Citrix has also made available a license migration path from VDI-in-a-Box to XenDesktop for customers that want to extend beyond VDI to leverage the full flexibility of XenDesktop while preserving their investment.  The end-user experience is consistent across both products as both VDI-in-a-Box and XenDesktop use the same HDX stack and Citrix Receiver.

    Access the Project Aruba Technology Preview here.
