• UCS Platform Emulator Released 2.2(1bPE1) & Fusion Install Directions

A long time ago on my blog I blogged about the UCS Emulator 2.0. Today a new release of the Platform Emulator has been released. Cisco is no longer an upstart in the blade market and is here to stay.

Have you always wanted to get your hands on Cisco UCS but you don’t want to buy your own, not everyone can have UCS at home or even work to test and play on. You have your chance here. I also walked through the installation on VMware Fusion on my Mac and documented below.

You can download the latest release on Cisco’s Communities Website here (Requires Cisco Login)

    New Hardware Features
Cisco UCS Platform Emulator, Release 2.2(1bPE1), adds support for the following new hardware:

    • SD card – All supported Compute servers now have SD card in their slot.

    New Software Features
Cisco UCS Platform Emulator, Release 2.2(1bPE1) includes the following new features:

    • Smartplay bundles with new bundle packs
    • Second-level boot order support for Blade and Rack servers
    • User-Space NIC (usNIC) support for Blade and Rack servers
    • Firmware download support from a local file system
    • Direct Connect Rack configuration feature in the Emulator GUI
    • SD card firmware upgrade support for supported Compute servers

NOTE:  From UCS PE 2.2(1bPE1) onwards, UCS PE supports uploading the B-Series and C-Series server firmware bundles.  Because of the large file sizes of the firmware bundles, UCS PE only supports uploading of only the stripped-down versions (attached to this document), which includes only the firmware metadata but not the actual firmware itself in the binaries.  The stripped-down version of the firwmare bundles which contain metadata only of the B-series and C-series server firmware is reduced to approximately 50 kB in size.

Installing the OVA into VMware Fusion 6.0.2

In VMware Fusion -> Click File -> New or Click Add in the top left window of the Virtual Machine Library
    Click More options…

    Import an existing virtual machine

Click Choose File.. locate the .ovf file in the OVA .zip file that you downloaded

     Select the Cisco_UCS_Platform_Emulator_2.2.1bPE1.ovf file

Select the Cisco_UCS_Platform_Emulator_2.2.1bPE1 -> Click Continue

Choose the directory you would like to store you Virtual Machines -> Click Save

     Import will begin

Once you start Finish the wizard. The virtual machine will start and complete an initialization sequence. Once this is complete you will have the Console Splash Page where you can either log in directly to the appliance or get the IP so you can manage it like you would a UCS Farm.

Now that I have my UCS UI IP. I can load my browser and Launch UCS Manager

I also received the following error when trying to open the UCS Manager Java Applet on my Mac (please stop using Java, its tantamount to abuse) . I was able to get around this error by applying the steps in this online blog.

    Default username: config
    Default Password: config

You end up with a single chassis with seven blades.

    Have fun.

  • Cisco UCSM 2.2(1b) Released

Cisco has released version 2.2 (1b) of the Cisco UCS Manager. I have been looking forward to this release. Lots of fixes, features and enhancements.

    From the original article.

We are pleased to announce the release of UCS Manager 2.2 codenamed “El Capitan”. The release is now available for download on Cisco.com as release 2.2(1b).

Links to download this release are as follows:

Relevant documentation for the 2.2(1) release can be accessed as follows:

The UCS Manager 2.2(1) release delivers several key features and major enhancements in the Fabric, Compute, and Operational areas. The following is a complete listing of the features in El Capitan:

UCS Manager 2.2 and its subsequent Maintenance Releases will be the last to support the Gen1 hardware, including 6100 series Fabric Interconnects, 2100 IO Modules, M1 series Servers, and M1-only adapters. Support for Gen1 hardware will drop starting the next major release, codenamed “Fletcher Cove”. With that in mind, UCS Manager 2.2 is planned to be a long-lived release, meaning the software lifecycle support is expected to be extended for another 12 months (~ 4 years) beforeannouncing the release EOS.

The UCS Advantage Trade-in Program provides an easy upgrade path for customers that want to migrate their Gen1 hardware to the latest Cisco UCS servers and technologies. This program is an excellent illustration of Cisco’s commitment to investment protection for our customers. Please contact your local Cisco Representative for details.

  • DHCP on Nexus 7k not working with Netflow enabled

Recently I ran into an issue that was quite perplexing.

Issue: DHCP does not work on the Nexus 7k with Netflow enabled

Symptoms: DHCP not handing out addresses (Citrix Provisioning Environment using DHCP + TFTP options in scope).

Not everyone runs DHCP in their datacenter server based networks but in VDI or End User Computing envornments running Citrix, VMware or other solutions this is a common practice so you may run into this issue if Netflow is enabled.

Workaround: When you remove the ip monitor netflow input, you need to bounce the l3 interface to take a effect.

Fix: This is fixed in an upcoming release, see the Bugfix below for more details.

  • Citrix Netscaler VPX Express (free but powerful)

An often overlooked resource (free) for small environments or for deployments with low requirements is the use of the Netscaler VPX Express. This is a very powerful device, and the VPX express gives you the features of a Standard Edition VPX express platform but has a few limitations.

    Use Cases:

    • Load Balancing a small XenDesktop or XenApp Farm
    • Load Balancing Citrix PVS tftp
    • Load Balancing AD request
    • Load Balancing DNS
    • Load Balancing just about any web site or service…
    • Unlimited ICA Proxy connections to XenDesktop/XenApp (still bound by 5 Mpbs throughput)
    • Remote access to Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenApp (Access Gateway)
    • Load Balancing a VMware View deployment (more to come on this one…)
    • Full VPN tunnel for up to 5 concurrent users
    • Clientless access to Web Sites or File Shares
    • External access to Exchange or other web sites and file shares.

    Benefits:

    • Netscaler Standard Edition Features
      • Load Balancing
      • Access Gateway
      • Content Switching
      • Web Logging
      • Content Filtering
      • URL Rewrite
    • Pay as you grow – VPX has all the same features and is only limited by licensing, can pay for a higher edition to expose new features and increase your total throughput
    • Netscaler includes 5 free Access Gateway Enterprise Edition concurrent licenses (what does that give me…?)
      • Full VPN Tunnel
      • EndPoint Analaysis
      • Policy Based SmartAccess
      • Clientless access to Web Sites and File Shares

I think you get the idea, so what are the major limitations of the Netscaler VPX Express? This sounds too good to be true..

    • License only last one year.. (bummer), “but wait there’s more..” but its free and you can just request another license for the next year
    • 5 Mbps throughput (this applies to all traffic and can be upgraded with a simple license purchase)
    • No SSL offload (this is try of any VPX Netscaler) The Netscaler physical appliances offer SSL offload to dedicated hardware for encryption/decryption. This improved the performance of the box as the CPU doesn’t have to handle the SSL encryption/decryption.

This is only the tip of the iceberg for what the Netscaler can do and the free ones main limitation is the bandwidth which can be upgraded with a license purchase. You can also deploy as many of these appliances as you need to handle the workload, each pair would have the 5 Mpbs limitation. It may not sound like much bandwidth but that is per second.

Test it out, deploy the VPX Express yourself and see what your workload throughput is by putting it through the Netscaler and you may be surprised, maybe the VPX Express will be right for you… The Netscaler VPX Express is easy to deploy and can run on VMware vSphere, Hyper-V and XenServer, there are appliances for each of these hypervisors.

  • Varrow Year 1 (And Oh btw, we are hiring)

It is hard to believe that is has been a year since I joined Varrow (over a year actually, I joined last July). This past year has been one of the busiest and best years I have ever had working at any company. I won’t say that this year hasn’t been without its challenges and that this or any company is perfect so I will also mention challenges as well as highlights over the past year. At the end of the post I will mention some of the types of positions Varrow is currently looking for, cause I need help :).

One of the best things about Varrow to me is our Culture. Varrow’s culture here is hard to describe to people that don’t work here.  Saying that the company or the culture is awesome just doesn’t justify what it is like to work here. I have been doing some introspection lately on what makes it one of the best companies I have worked for.

Some of the reasons I believe Varrow is a great company to work for:

    • The People
      • A lot goes into the hiring process here and they are very selective on the candidates which they hire to make sure they will be a good fit for our customers, and to make sure they are a good fit within Varrow. You can have all the skills in the world and not be a good fit, and we can teach you the skills you need but we cant always make this the right fit for you. That fit goes both ways as this job is not for everyone. I talked about that here back in April on Consulting
      • I think every employee here plays a role in making it a great place to work but a lot of credit goes here to our leadership team that started this business and continue to drive it to success. Jeremiah Cook and Dan Weiss are both people that foster and build upon the things that I think make this company great and have maintained that even with rapid growth.
    • Sense of Connection (in a Virtual World)
      • I really feel a connection with the people I work with even though I am remote probably 80% or more of the time. Through regular team building, company events (such as Varrow Madness) and use of Social Media, along with regular calls, Varrow stays very connected and in tune. Local Pow-Wows and random dinner conversations are a regular occurrence here. We often travel in the same areas and find reasons to get together to talk shop and have a good time (Ask AJ Kuftic about joining his Fried Chicken Quest or talk to Jason Nash about guns).
    • Evolving (knowledge and abilities)
      • Varrow is filled with some very talented folks at all levels, and they feed off each other (not literally like zombies though) and this fosters this constant evolving of ways to stay on top of the latest trends and technologies. There are some very innovative training programs being developed internally for people at all levels.

This video I found on our Varrow Linkedin Page really made me think a lot about these things.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=i1Ux6hDnPPE

Highlights over the past year: (in no particular order)

    • Varrow Madness – Annual Technical Conference featuring our best and brightest delivery technical content as well as guest speakers all centered around March Madness. Last year I helped build our Varrow Labs for Citrix XenDesktop delivered on vCloud, I learned a lot from that experience, it was also a good chance for me to share some Citrix PVS knowledge around best practices
      • This year Varrow Madness will be in Charlotte on March 20, 2014. Registration is already open for next year, drop me in the referral if you found out through here. The Engineers are trying to beat the Sales team on Registrations
    • Oil Changes – Regular company events where we get together to update each other and share ideas and drive internal innovation. These are a lot of fun and we also throw some killer parties
    • Company Kickoff– We usually have a big company kickoff at the beginning of the year, similar to an oil changes but Bigger, Badder and stronger (Gentleman, we have the technology)
    • Latest and Greatest Technologies – I often get the chance to play with some really cool products such as Citrix HDX 3D Pro to delivery high resolution images for workloads like AutoCad and medical imaging, XenMobile, XenDesktop 7 and more…

Challenges over the past year: (Again in no particular order)

    • Travel – Travel here is much better than I have had in some previous positions but still is a challenge as i can sometimes spend quite some time on the road in between engagements. How much I travel varies considerably as sometimes I am at home for weeks and other times I am gone every week but I am home every weekend. I also rarely fly any more (I will miss my Airline status when that expires).
    • Keeping Up with the Jones’s (Wait I am a Jones..) – Staying on top of any technology can be quite the timesync especially as new products are released. I push myself in this regard as I try to maintain several areas of knowledge and even develop new ones. This is both a challenge and a highlight. It plays a lot into the work/life balance.
    • Spending Quality time with the family (during the week) Weekends are almost always dedicated to the family, sometimes I sneak some times here and there when nothing is going on to work. During the week when I am gone is sometimes hard as I like to put my boys to bed, read bed time stories, even help with homework. A big burden of doing all these things and more fall on my wife during the week and I couldn’t do this without her. She is my rock and I love her very much.
    • Growth – This again is a good thing and it can also be a challenge to not only maintain but keep exceeding expectations.

With all of that being said,  it has been an amazing year and I feel pretty lucky to have landed here. Varrow is now an extended family for me, and I love it here.

     Varrow is hiring.

As I said in the title about “And Oh btw we are hiring”. I did not write this page as a recruitment page but thought I would throw this out here as were growing fast and have needs for numerous positions.

So if you are interested and want to chat about coming to work for Varrow or know someone that might be a good fit, you can reach out to me at pjones@varrow.com, you can also reach out to me on twitter @P2Vme.

Some of the Specialties we are hiring for currently include, but is not limited to just the following. You can also check out our current openings on our careers page.

    • Storage – EMC
    • Backup and Recovery
    • VMware
    • VMware View
    • Citrix
    • Networking
    • Project Managers
    • Account Executives

  • Cisco UCS Error Watchdog 8190

I have seen this issue a handful of times at various sites and I thought I would share with you ways you might resolve this issue.

Issue/Symptoms:  Cisco B Series blade boots to a WatchDog 8190 Major error halting on every boot. Hitting ESC will allow the current boot process but each reboot will halt on the error.

    Resolution:

    Reset CIMC
    Reset CMOS
    Recover Corrupt BIOS
Cisco has also recommend in the forum post located here the following workaround as well.

    Work around

Disabling POST ERROR PAUSE option in BIOS policy would allow the system to complete boot sequence without user intervention

if you have a Cisco partner or customer account, you should be able to login and see the Bugfix for this issue located here.

  • Citrix Provisioning Services 6.1 Blue Screen

Following on the footsteps of older bugs coming back to bite us. I have found an issue with Citrix Provisioning Services 6.1 Update 19 on Windows 2008 R2 (this does not affect Windows 2008 x86).

Issue: Citrix Provisioning Server 6.x displays Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) when starting target Virtual Machine from the vDisk.  When starting the target Virtual Machine from the vDisk, this BSoD (0x0000007b) is displayed, while the master Virtual Machine did not have any problems.

The machine was created with the correct steps. I went through the standard PVS troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.
The machine was cloned off the master template used to create the image
VMware ethernet IDs matched on the clones setup using the Streamed VM Setup Wizard in PVS
Image was built with the VMXNET3 Adapter
You can find most of those troubleshooting steps in this Citrix article
If you have worked with Citrix Provisioning Services for some time you have more than likely encountered this error before..
I first dismissed this article from Citrix that explicitly mentions the following and it applies to older versions of the products and mentions that this issue is resolved.

Note: Do NOT install the Device Identity Manager software if you are running Provisioning Services 6.0 software or later. The latest version of Device Identity Manager was included in the 6.0 target device software going forward. Installing Device Identity Manager atop any 6.0 or later target device software breaks the network interface and prevents XenConvert from running.

But this article was exactly what the doctor ordered, Eureka!!, I was almost ready to rebuild the image from scratch as everything else worked correctly.

Resolution: Apply Microsoft KB article 2550979 Updated 10/10/2013  New link to support 2008 R2 SP1 and RTM patch

I recommend going through the other steps for troubleshooting first but I hope this helps you resolve this issue in the future.

  • Citrix Configuration Logging Error

Sometimes old bugs come back to bite us when we least expect them, we believe them to be solved. This has been the week of old bugs. On a deployment of Citrix XenApp 5.0 on Windows 2008 (x86) I was setting up Configuration logging.

I should get the following message upon completion of the wizard.

Instead I was greeted with the following message
    Invalid username or password.

With some healthy google searches, I happened upon the following Citrix Forum post describing what I was experiencing.. I then asked the customer if they had a capital S as the first character of the password. BINGO.

We created another account for configuration logging, tested and bingo we were able to set up the connection to the database, we verified the issue also by testing it first with a capital S and without and were able to duplication the issue.

Issue: Configuration logging fails for administrators whose SQL Server password starts with a capital letter S.

Resolution: Change the password to not use Capital S as the first character or use a different account for Configuration logging.

Note: This issue has been resolved in most of the current releases of Citrix via hotfixes and rollup packs but currently there is no hotfix for XenApp 5 for Windows 2008.

  • XenDesktop 7 Beta Exams are out and Free

I wanted to take a moment and mention that Citrix has released the Beta exams for XenDesktop7 and the best part is that they are FREE. Beta exams can be grueling and typically have a ton of questions but you can’t beat the price.

  • vCenter Log Insight – New product for Enterprise Log Management

VMware announces a new product today to help you manage your logs and from more than just the VMware vCenter and vSphere side, this is a powerful log analytics product that can help you better understand your environment. This product in conjunction with vCenter Operations should offer a complete solution to manage your VMware Cloud.

A lot of customer’s out there from SMB to Enterprise can easily see the need for a solution such as vCenter Log Insight if they have ever had to dig through logs to find an issue, and that happens all too frequently and is very time consuming. The average vSphere Host will generate ~250 MB of logs per day and Microsoft Exchange can generate over 1 GB of logs each day.

vCenter Log Insight is a new platform built from ground up for Log Analytics. This doesn’t feel like a 1.0 product and I looking forward to seeing this product develop and be implemented to help customers. I found the user experience to be simple to use, but still very powerful and responsive.
